Students protest repressive checks connected with support for EuroMaidan

15.01.2014

Students from the Kyiv National University have declared a hunger strike demanding that the state inspectorate of educational institutions terminate its unscheduled checks.

The inspectors are carrying out a check from Jan 11 to 25 of Kyiv institutes which the students view as a form of repression against people taking part in or otherwise supporting EuroMaidan.   They accuse the inspectors of being biased and putting pressure on lecturers during exams.

This view is basically shared by the head of the Verkhovna Rada profile committee on education, Lilia Hrynevych.  She says that the inspectors are interfering in the exam process, looking at students’ attendance records and advising lecturers on the marks they should give.

According to the committee’s information, these checks have ended at the Kyiv National University, but there are reports of similar checks at other institutes.

“We have reports from witnesses that during the checks, members of the commission interfere in the exam process, and it is this that the students are protesting about.”

As well as checking attendance records, and advising on marks, they also sometimes recommend during the exam to change its format, for example, from written to oral. Hrynkevych stresses that such interference hinders objective assessment and a normal atmosphere during the exams.

She says that she has written to the minister, Dmytro Tabachnyk on this subject, but has had no reply.
