Permission to fire, sir
The Minister of Employment and Social Protection Mykhailo Paliyev has proposed adding a provision to the Labour Code which would give employers the right to fire a pregnant woman for infringements of labour legislation. Mr Paliyev announced this during a press conference given on 10 May.
He says that it would, in this way, be possible to eliminate the problem of discrimination against women when the latter are applying for jobs. At present employers often refuse to employ a woman since if she gets pregnant, they dont have the right, in accordance with labour legislation to dismiss her.
Paliyev added that the Labour Code is being prepared for its second reading in the Verkhovna Rada and expects that it will be passed at the end of the summer, “I hope, in its entirety”.
