On the eve of the International Day against Fascism and Anti-Semitism

Any readers in Kyiv are cordially invited on 6 November to a showing of the film “Spell your name” (2006), followed by an open discussion with the participation of Anatoly Podolsky, Director of the Ukrainian Centre for Holocaust Studies.

The Film Club of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy together with Kyiv member of Amnesty International in Ukraine cordially invite you to join us in an event to mark International Day Against Fascism and Anti-Semitism on 6 November at 18.30.  There will be a showing of the film “Spell your name” (2006), followed by an open discussion with the participation of Anatoly Podolsky, Director of the Ukrainian Centre for Holocaust Studies.

“Spell your name” is a full-length documentary film about the Holocaust in Ukraine. It was created by the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation in partnership with the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation.  The film’s director Serhiy Bukovsky based the film on testimony in Ukrainian and Russian from the archives of the Shoah Foundation Institute, as well as using modern footage shot in Ukraine.

Serhiy Bukovsky invites the viewer on a journey of discovery, delving together with Ukrainian students into the testimony of local Jewish residents who miraculously survived the mass executions, as well as of those who saved their friends, neighbours or totally unknown people during the Holocaust. We learn what they went through while at the same time having the opportunity to view contemporary Ukraine and find out about ethnic stereotypes which linger to this day. We also see how post-Soviet society is dealing with the issue of how to fittingly immortalize places of mass execution of tens of thousands of Jewish families and other victims of Nazism.

The discussion will be led by Tamara Martsenyuk, Amnesty International activist, sociologist from the Sociology Faculty of the National University of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

9 November is International Day against Fascism and Anti-Semitism. The day was chosen in memory of the pogrom from 9 to 10 November 1938 known as Kristallnacht (literally Night of Broken Glass) which saw synagogues set alight, shops and Jewish houses looted, and widespread killings.
