Yushchenko, Tymoshenko and Prosecutor General in the running for human rights anti-award

All three have been put forward for the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union’s "Thistle of the Year" anti-award for “unlawful actions against the judiciary and contempt for the justice system”, while Yushchenko is also “running” under the category “For indifference to human rights violations”.

President Yushchenko, Prime Minister Tymoshenko and Prosecutor General Medvedko have all been put forward for the human rights anti-award “Thistle of the Year” which is awarded by the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union [UHHRU] for the most flagrant and most dangerous human rights abuses in a given year.

All three have been put forward for “unlawful actions against the judiciary and contempt for the justice system”, while Yushchenko is also “running” under the category “For indifference to human rights violations”.

In the running for the dubious anti-award of being in charge of the “least open public authority” are the Minister of Justice Mykola Onishchuk and the Mayor of Kirovohrad Volodymyr Puzakov, who is also nominated “for “for absolute failure to act in cases of human rights abuse” The Ministry of Health has also been put forward as the least open public authorities. while the “Anti-Corruption Committee” has been nominated for “unlawful violence against citizens”, “absolute failure to act in cases of human rights abuse”,  and “professional activities which discredit the principles of democracy”.

Nominations are open until 20 November. The Awards will be announced on 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Last year’s Thistle of the Year Anti-Awards went to Mykola Iltyai, the Deputy Head of the State Department for the Execution of Sentences “for brutal violence against prisoners”; Vasyl Koshchynets, Head of the State Department for the Execution of Sentences “for absolute failure to act in cases of human rights abuse”. the Prosecutor General of Ukraine “for absolute failure to act in cases of human rights abuse”. Vasyl Hrytsak, National Deputy [MP], member of the Party of the Regions “for the most flagrant interference in people’s private life” and “for the most dangerous legislative initiative”. He is lobbyist for the private concern SSAPS [Single State Automated Passport System]., and Leonid Chernovetsky, Mayor of Kyiv and Head of the Kyiv City State Administration “for unlawful restriction of freedom of movement”. During the year, he had repeatedly attempted to restrict the lawful rights of individuals who are not registered in Kyiv.
