The reduction in the powers of Ukraine’s Supreme Court will restrict the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens. This is the view of the Head of the Association of Supreme Court Heads in the EU and President of the Austrian Supreme Court, Irmgard Griss.

Ms Griss called the changes in the new Law on the Judicial System and Status of Judges extreme and pointed out that they would undoubtedly have an impact on the further development of Ukrainian court proceedings.

In her view, depriving the Supreme Court of its powers as cassation level cannot fail to restrict the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens whose defence at the highest court level will now depend on the wish of higher specialised courts to allow or not allow the Supreme Court to review a case.

She added that the Ukrainian legislators in carrying out court reform should have taken into consideration international experience in the area of court justice.
