Opposition leaders call on Tymoshenko to end her hunger strike

14.11.2012
On the same day that Ms Tymoshenko’s trial on new charges was again deferred, opposition leaders came to ask the jailed former Prime Minister and opposition leader to stop the hunger strike she declared in protest at election fraud

On Tuesday the same court in Kharkiv which has been deferring hearings in the second trial of former Prime Ministry and opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko did so once again. Presiding judge Sadovsky said that the case could not be heard without Ms Tymoshenko and her defender.  Ms Tymoshenko has consistenly stated that her health does not allow her to attend.

Four leaders of the opposition went to the hospital in Kharkiv where Ms Tymoshenko is being treated on Tuesday. It is not known whether they were allowed to see Ms Tymoshenko. They told journalists that they were bringing a resolution passed by the opposition parties – the United Opposition, UDAR and VO Svoboda calling on the opposition leader to end her hunger strike. As reported, she began this immediately after the 28 October elections in protest at alleged election fraud.  The Penitentiary Service has also reported that her doctors are advising her to end the hunger strike.

Yulia Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year sentence passed over the 2009 gas accords with Russia. On January 26, 2012 the Parliamentary Assembly Council of Europe (PACE) passed Resolution 1862 declaring that the articles under which Tymoshenko was convicted are ‘‘overly broad in application and effectively allow for ex post facto criminalization of normal political decision making.”

In the new prosecution announced just days after this conviction which was universally and unequivocally condemned, she is accused of organizing concealment of foreign currency profit of over 155 million USD; illegal compensation with public funding and tax evasion amounting to over 47 million UAH through financial machinations
