33-year-old Yevhen Kotlyar was killed in gunfire on Thursday near the Khreshchatyk metro station.  He had come to Kyiv to join the barricades on Feb 17.

Yevhen was active in Kharkiv’s Zeleny Front [Green Front] and in the campaign back in 2010 against the felling of trees in Gorky Park.  During those weeks of confrontation, the authorities, and especially the police used brutal methods against totally peaceful protesters and the logging of century-old trees in the city’s forest park continued.  In a typically fearless move Yevhen and another activist tied themselves to trees hoping that this would stop the barbarism. It did not.  Harrowing images were sent even to the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commissioner of the city council’s logger sawing down the tree with Yevhen on it.  He managed to leap to his safety that time.   On Thursday, tragically, the regime proved more murderous.
