The International Renaissance Foundation refutes the suggestion made by the Head of the Party of the Regions faction in parliament, O. Yefremov that a scenario similar to that in Northern Africa is being set in motion in Ukraine on money from IRF’s founder, George Soros.

IRF Executive Director, Yevhen Bystrytsky has issued the following statement.

All funds without exception which the founder of the International Renaissance Foundation, George Soros has voluntarily allocated in order to promote the development of an open democratic society, as well as to help those groups of citizens who suffered from the world financial crisis, are provided and spent in Ukraine solely in accordance with the decisions or recommendations of Ukrainian citizens – independent experts – Members of the Board and the Foundation’s Programme Councils.

The International Renaissance Foundation functions as a national foundation. This means that nobody in Ukraine trains or could train, on Soros’ instructions, any “group of young guys”, nor set in motion “various projects along the lines of Northern Africa”.  There are no such instructions or projects, nor could there be.

The political force which the leader of the faction is in charge of has, instead of promoting constructive dialogue between the authorities and numerous civic organizations, dialogue which has been seriously undermined by the authorities, especially over the last year, is being led by Oleksandr Yefremov in the opposite direction – against civic activity through claims of a non-existent threat of social destabilization. Instead of building on the activity of civic organizations, on the social capital of civic society, a politician in a responsible position is making irresponsible statements.

The International Renaissance Foundation as a national institution functions in a maximally transparent and accountable manner. The report on absolutely all support provided to civic organizations and current institutions, including what is provided at present, is on open access on the Foundation’s website and in its annual reports.

Clearly the “information that Soros has also allocated particular resources” which the politician cites must, after this statement, be proven and made public.

Yevhen Bystrytsky, Executive Director of the International Renaissance Foundation
