Ukrainian human rights activist denied entry to Belarus

Marina Tsapok who was travelling to help the International Observer Mission of the Committee for International Monitoring of the Human Rights Situation in Belarus was removed from the Kyiv-Minsk train and forced to return to Ukraine.

 

In the early hours of 20 April, Marina Tsapok, Information Assistant to one of the members of the Committee for International Monitoring of the Human Rights Situation in Belarus was taken off the Kyiv-Minsk train and forced to return to Ukraine.

She had been going to Minsk to provide assistance to the Committee’s International Observer Mission.

This is not the first such action by the Belarusian border guards.

On 16 March the Head of the International Observer Mission, Maxim Kytsuk was removed from the same train. He was told by border guards that his name was on a list of people banned from entering the country.

On 16 March the Head of the Committee for International Monitoring of the Human Rights Situation in Belarus, Andrei Yurov, a Russian national, was detained. He was told that he had been placed on a persona non grata list back on 4 March. He was told to leave Belarus within 24 hours.

The Committee for International Monitoring of the Human Rights Situation in Belarus began its work in Minsk on 27 December 2010.  It is made up of representatives of NGOs from OSCE countries and international civic networks and organizations. It carries out monitoring of the general human rights situation in Belarus, as well as issues regarding protection of human rights activists and ensuring their professional activities.
