Party of the Regions not bound by European Parliament Resolution

The Head of the Party’s faction in parliament in his own words: “We live in a free country and the resolutions of State bodies of other countries are not mandatory for implementation by our country. It is therefore at very least incorrect to ask whether we are obliged to enforce the decisions of other parliaments”.

The Leader of the Verkhovna Rada faction of the Party of the Regions, Oleksandr Yefremov shows little concern over last Thursday’s European Parliament Resolution which expressed concern over selective prosecutions in Ukraine and other issues.  When asked at a press conference whether his party supports BYUT [the bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko] in its demand that the government enforce the resolution, Yefremov responded:

“We live in a free country and the resolutions of State bodies of other countries are not mandatory for implementation by our country. It is therefore at very least incorrect to ask whether we are obliged to enforce the decisions of other parliaments”.

He added however that the Party of the Regions was inclined to “listen to” the European Parliament Resolution, but to the document as a whole, not to particular items.

He said that two weeks ago he worked with representatives of the European Parliament in Berlin “and there are quite big differences of opinion regarding Ukraine. We will consider this document in its entirety and not only individual lines”.
