The USA. European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe have sharply criticized the actions of the Belarusian authorities directed against the opposition.

Former presidential candidate, Aleksandr Milnkevich, the the leader of the Belarusian Party of Communists, Sergei Kalyakin, the head of the Labour Party, Aleksandr Bukhvostov and the leader of the Belarusian People’s Front, Vintsuk Vychorka were today sentenced to 15 days administrative arrest for organizing an (allegedly) unsanctioned rally “Chernobyl Way” which took place in Minsk on 26 April.

OSCE demanded that Milinkevich and the others arrested be released immediately, labelling such treatment of the opposition as “unacceptable”.

In its statement, the European Union stressed that the Belarusian opposition had simply been exercising its right to freedom of speech and of assembly.
