The Ministry of Justice plans to broaden the right to alternative military service

Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice is proposing to acknowledge the right of conscripts to alternative service in the army for moral reasons. According to the Ministry’s Press Service, the relevant draft law has already been submitted to the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers. Under the proposed law, conscripts will have the right not only on religious grounds to alternative service, but also on moral grounds, because they oppose the use of violence on principle.

In addition, the draft law envisages a new form of work for conscripts doing alternative service, namely helping in the liquidation of the consequences of emergencies. The new law was drawn up to comply with Ukraine’s commitments as member of the Council of Europe.
