More on the Campaign: “FOR THE FREEDOM OF POLITICAL PRISONERS IN BELARUS”

A reminder of those who need our active support

As we reported at the time, on 16 June 2006 SOLIDARITY WITH BELARUS DAY actions took place in Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, the USA and other countries, aimed at drawing the attention of the international community, the press and politicians to the plight of Belarusian political prisoners awaiting trial in Belarusian prisons.  The website http://za.nashih.info placed information about the prisoners, and began collecting signatures for a petition calling for their immediate release. This was how, through the joint efforts of the Belarusian Diaspora, Belarusian civic initiatives, and the families of the political prisoners, a new information campaign was launched: “FOR THE FREEDOM OF POLITICAL PRISONERS IN BELARUS”

In july 2006 the trials are due to take place in Belarus of young members of the civic organization “Partnerstvo”/ The trial of ex-presidential candidate Aleksandr Kozulin was due to begin on 6 July, while the trial is continuing of Nikolai Avtukhovich, a Belarusian businessman.

In today’s Belarus, it would be difficult to expect a fair trial, however if each of us registers our protest, it is in our power to change the situation!

Belarusian officials and judges are today, as never before, aware of their vulnerability. They are beginning to realize that the day must come when they will be called to answer for their illegal actiтанціях” для збору необхідних документів)?:

It is in our power to make them understand that in each unjust charge for political motives, it is not only Lukashenko who is responsible, but each of them.

Politicians and the press, civic activists and simply all concerned people, by raising this issue at government level in their countries, in the EU, at the international level, and in particular, at the meeting of the G8 in St. Petersburg are capable of influencing the behaviour of the Belarusian authorities.

The campaign “For the Freedom of Political Prisoners in Belarus” has been run through the combined efforts of Belarusian and foreign activists in a number of countries, with protest actions and pickets near Belarusian embassies, an information campaign among politicians and the press about the plight of those charged, and an Internet campaign of solidarity with Belarusian political prisoners.

All information is placed on the website http://za.nashih.info. A lot of people have already signed the petition calling for the immediate release of the political prisoners.

We would ask you all to personally support all Belarusian political prisoners, to disseminate information about them among all your contacts, to lobby on this theme at parliamentary level, by joining the iInternet campaign and taking part in acts on the next SOLIDARITY WITH BELARUS DAY 16 July 2006.
