APPEAL COURT FREES MYKOLA KONOBRYTSKY

14.08.2006
For those following our SOS, the sentence passed on the Head of the First Ukrainian Lyceum in Kramatorsk has been revoked!

On 11 August a hearing was held of the Donetsk Regional Appeal Court to consider the appeal lodged by he Head of the First Ukrainian Lyceum in Kramatorsk, Mykola Konobrytsky.  The Prosecutor agreed that no selfish motives had been proven for the financial irregularities in question.  In view of this, the sentence was revoked, and Mykola Konobrytsky was freed in the courtroom.

This information, by the way, was posted on the FREE MYKOLA KONOBRYTSKY website: http://tak.dn.ua/  While it is to be hoped that the Appeal Court, guided by the rule of law, would have revoked the sentence anyway, it should be mentioned, that there was considerable public opposition to what was widely seen as a punishment for Mr Konobrytsky’s independent stand.  The sentence of 3 years deprivation of liberty had in any case seemed unwarranted given that the Head of the First Ukrainian Lyceum in Kramatorsk had only “fiddled” the records in order to find money to pay for badly needed repairs which the authorities had not provided for the previous seven years – and every last kopeck had been accounted for.  More details can be found at:
