A series of actions are planned by the Media Trade Union and civic organizations to mark the sixth anniversary of Georgy Gongadze’s disappearance

On 15 and 16 September the Media Trade Union and a number of civic organizations are holding a series of actions both to mark the sixth anniversary of Georgy Gongadze’s disappearance and to draw attention to the increased difficulties in carrying out their work which journalists have been confronting over the last two months.

On 15 September:

The Verkhovna Rada is to hear a reform from the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Oleksandr Medvedko on the course of the investigation into the murder of Georgy Gongadze.

11.30  Launch of the journalist campaign “Hands off freedom!” at the Verkhovna Rada.

Meeting point: in front of the entrance leading to the press area (5 Hrushevsky St.).

12.00 – Press conference held by the Media Trade Union of Ukraine and the Institute of Mass Information on the launching of a Ukrainian rating : “Enemies of the Press”

(in the Verkhovna Rada near the press area on the third floor).

12.00  Representatives of the International Federation of Journalists, partners of the Media Trade Union, will picket Ukrainian embassies abroad demanding that the investigation into the murder of Georgy Gongadze be concluded and that those responsible be punished. In the evening on the news programs of leading television channels there will be a 7-second film clip in memory of Georgy Gongadze, with a similar symbol coming out in printed newspaper and on Internet websites.
