Only Iraq and Algiers are more dangerous for journalists than Russia

The Russian Federation stands in third place in the world for the number of journalists killed over the last 15 years, Reuters has reported, referring to the international Committee to Protect Journalists.

In the list of the most dangerous countries for journalists the only countries with worse figures than Russia’s (42 journalists killed) were Iraq (78 killed) where there has been military action since 1991 and Algiers (60 killed) where for several years there has been civilian confrontation between the government and Islamist fundamentalists.

According to the study, in total since 1991 580 journalists throughout the world have died in violent circumstances.

“Journalism has become a pretty dangerous profession”, the Executive Director of the Committee Joel Simon stated.

According to estimates by specialists, seven of every ten reporters killed were writing material in which the actions of the authorities were subjected to harsh criticism.
