They are in no doubt that she was killed because of her fearless journalism and call on the authorities to find those responsble and bring them to justice

Major international human rights organizations have expressed their outrage at the murder in Moscow of the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya.  Statements have been issued by representatives of the Council of Europe, OSCE, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), “Reporters without Frontiers”, Amnesty International, the Committee to Defend Journalists and Freedom House.

They have called on the Russian authorities to take all measures to investigate the murder.

The IFJ Secretary General Adrian White called Anna Politkovskaya the most courageous of the new generation of Russian journalists.

White is in no doubt that this was a contract killing. “For us it is absolutely obvious that when a journalist with the reputation which Anna Politkovskaya had is murdered, that this is evidence of the lawlessness reigning in Russia which is threatening all journalists.  This was quite clearly a contract killing, and it is extremely important that Vladimir Putin’s government takes immediate steps to find the murders and bring them to justice.

In Russia itself human rights activists and a number of politicians are also convinced that Anna Politkovskaya’s murder was linked with her journalist work.
