Russian diplomats consider that the Ukrainian authorities are one-sided in their treatment of the events of the 1930s which, in their view, casts a shadow over Ukrainian – Russian relations. This was the substance of a statement made public on Wednesday, 25 October,  by the Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ukraine is seeking to have Holodomor [the artificially induced Famine] of 1932 – 1933 declared an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people and hopes to table this issue in the UN General Assembly next year. In the opinion of the Russian foreign policy department it is enough that the world community has expressed sympathy for the millions of victims of Holodomor regardless of their nationality.

Holodomor has already been recognized as genocide by 10 parliaments of different countries, and the Verkhovna Rada is planning to  consider legislating such recognition.
