The Verkhovna Rada has passed a Resolution on marking the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Ukrainian Public Group to Promote the Implementation of the Helsinki Accords.

The Resolution speaks of the need for ceremonial recognition at state level of the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Ukrainian Public Group to Promote the Implementation of the Helsinki Accords which had an important impact on the development of both the national, and the world Helsinki human rights movement. The implementation of the measures envisaged will help the further development of the human rights movement in the country, and the restoration of historical justice with regard to is founders and members.

The draft Resolution envisages a number of measures aimed at popularizing the Ukrainian Helsinki movement and honouring the memory of its participants.

The implementation of the measures outlined in the Resolution will not incur significant expenditure from the state budget.

The passing of the Resolution will assist in the restoration of historical justice and in honouring the memory of those who began the human rights movement in Ukraine.

However in the opinion of the organizations of the events to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, the passing of this Resolution is a populist move with none of the action for making the date having been agreed with the actual organizing committee, and with no practical assistance being offered.
