Criminal liability for denying Holodomor as genocide against the Ukrainian people

A draft law registered in the Verkhovna Rada would impose liabilityand fairly serious punishment for the public denial of Holdomor 1932-1933

A draft law has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada which would impose liability for denying Holodomor as genocide against the Ukrainian people.  It was submitted by Y. Kendzyor and R. Chubarov.

The proposed law reads:

On introducing amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine (on liability for public denial of Holodomor 1932-1933 as genocide against the Ukrainian people

The Verkhovna Rada resolves

1.  To introduce amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine (as published in Vidomosti Verkhovnoyi Rady, 2001, No. 25-26, p. 131):

To add to Article 442 Genocide, a third paragraph with the following content:

Public denial of Holodomor 1932-1933 as genocide against the Ukrainian people, as well as the preparation of material with a public denial of this fact in order to disseminate it, or the actual dissemination of such material

- shall be punishable by custodial arrest for a period of up to six months or deprivation of liberty for up to 3 years.

2.  This law shall come into force on the day of its publication.
