Museum of Soviet Occupation created in Kyiv

The Kyiv organization of the Vasyl Stus Memorial Society has announced the creation of a Museum of Soviet Occupation, based on the exhibition “Not to be forgotten”: Chronicle of the Communist Inquisition: 1917 - 1991”.  This harrowing and detailed exhibition, the first in post-Soviet republics, has been running since 2001.  An English language version has been shown at the UN, and in many European countries, the USA and Canada and (the text to the exhibits) can be found on the Internet at: http://memorial.kiev.ua/expo/eng/dates.html

The museum also contains the exhibitions “Ukrainian Solovky”, “Kyiv Martyrologue” (about architectural monuments in Kyiv destroyed by the communists) and “Holodomor [the Famine of 1932-1933] in photographs and documents”.

An exhibition is being prepared entitled “Narodna viyna” [“People’s war”], devoted to the rural and Cossack uprisings in Ukraine between 1917 and 1932.  The study helps gain an understanding of Holdomor 1932-1933 which was effectively a punitive action perpetrated by an occupying regime against Ukrainian defiance.

The museum contains video and audio material as well as a library.
