Supreme Court upholds conviction of the murders of journalist Ihor Aleksandrov

21.06.2007
In one of the most notorious cases from 2001 where journalists were killed in Ukraine, the Prosecutor General had actually called for a harsher sentence

The ruling from the Luhansk Regional Court of Appeal which sentenced 5 men to periods of imprisonment from 3 to 15 years for their involvement in the killing of the journalist was passed almost a year ago, on 7 July 2006. The Prosecutor General soon afterwards applied to the Supreme Court to review the sentences which the prosecutor’s office believed too lenient. However the Supreme Court left the ruling unchanged.

Ihor Aleksandrov had written a lot of hard-hitting articles about Donetsk politicians and about corruption in the law enforcement agencies. He was murdered in 2001.
