Following appeals from national minorities, the Minister of Education has made the first moves to ensuring that university entrance exams are in the applicants’ language

The Ministry of Education and Science has received a request from representatives of national minorities regarding external testing for entry to university. A meeting held on this subject with the Minister Stanislav Nikolayenko decided that it would be a good idea to translate the tests into the languages of national minorities.

The Ministry’s statement mentions an appeal from the Hungarian community. The later complained that young people taking the tests in maths, biology and chemistry in Ukrainian do not always understand well and asked that the external exams be in their language.

According to the statement issued, the Minister has instructed the Director of the Ukrainian Assessment Centre Ihor Likarchuk to look into this and make proposals.

Since the council agreed in principle to translating the exams, the Assessment Centre now needs to develop specific mechanisms and measures.
