SBU is planning to tell the truth about Soviet efforts at discrediting the UPA

The Ukrainian Security Service [SBU] has a document providing evidence of crimes committed by agents of the MGB [the name at the time of the NKVD or KGB] who disguised themselves as UPA [Ukrainian Resistance Army] fighters and tortured and murdered people in Western Ukraine. The Acting Head of SBU told TV Channel 5 that the document would be made public shortly.  He explained:

“We have a document which was known to Khrushchev in 1949, and the time has come to publish it. It is the report of one of the military prosecutors about so-called special fighting units which, under the guise of UPA units, ran rampant in Western Ukraine. These were special MGB agents who created fighting units dressed like UPA fighters. In Western Ukraine they ran riot, murdering people and raping young women. In this way they left behind them a blot against those who were fighting for Ukraine’s freedom. That is, about the UPA. And all the distortions and lies which revolve around the UPA or the figure of Hero of Ukraine Shukhevych were incited at that time by the punitive bodies of the MGB, and these lies continue to the present time. We need to publish this document as soon as possible. This should unite Ukraine which is still living on lies, regardless of whether these originate in the West or East of the country.”
