Less and less Ukrainians

20.12.2007
Over the first 10 months of the year, according to the State Committee of Statistics, there were 398 thousand births against 630 thousand deaths however the Ministry of Justice asserts that the ratio is decreasing

Since the beginning of 2007 the population of Ukraine has decreased by 222 thousand – from 46 million 646 thousand to 46 million 424 thousand.  Over the first 10 months of the year, according to the State Committee of Statistics, there were 398 thousand births against 630 thousand deaths.

After this information was published on many Internet sites, the Ministry of Justice posted its own report in which it states that the reports were not accurate.  It refutes firstly information about marriages and divorces, then asserts that the difference between the birth and death rates is decreasing.  It points out that during the third quarter of 2007 the birth rate in five regions was higher than the mortality rate.  The regions in question are the Transcarpathian, Rivne, Volyn, Lviv regions and the city of Kyiv.
