Plans to develop vocational training in penal institutions

The First Deputy Minister of Justice has spoken of plans to expand the network of existing vocational centres and create new ones within penal institutions

The First Deputy Minister of Justice Yevhen Korniychuk has spoken of plans to expand the network of existing vocational centres and create new ones within penal institutions.

During a visit to penal colony No. 35, he said that a comprehensive reform of the entire penitentiary system would be beginning this year. He specifically mentioned that the Ministry of Justice, working together with the State Department for the Execution of Sentences, had already developed a strategy plan for legislative, technical and humanitarian improvements of the State Penal Service. He promised that all efforts would be made to bring Ukraine’s penal institutions into line with world standards and bring the number of complaints of rights violations and ill-treatment to a minimum.

While visiting a training centre for the Penal Service, Mr Korniychuk spoke of other plans and needs. He said that at the present time consideration was being given to creating a specialized educational institution training staff for the penal service.
