St Petersburg opposition leader remanded in custody

05.03.2008
The charges are worryingly absurd and the timing of Maxim Reznik’s arrest – on the eve of a March of those in dissent in St Petersburg – even more disturbing

In St Petersburg members of the opposition have begun a picket in support of the leader of the Petersburg branch of “Yabloko”, Maxim Reznik, remanded in custody for an indefinite period.

He faces charges of insulting a representative of the authorities and using force against a representative of the authorities.

Maxim Reznik was detained in the early hours of Monday morning near the office of the “Yabloko” Party. Some people on the street were fighting and he attempted to intervene. The law enforcement agencies claim that he did not obey police officers. Reznik himself believes that the whole thing was set up to prevent him taking part in the March of those in dissent [Marsh niesoglasnykh] planned for 3 March.
