More on the latest use of spetsnaz in a penal colony

05.04.2008
A visit by two representatives of the Ombudsperson resulted in the withdrawal of the spetsnaz unit (although the Head of the colony Yury Zavhorodny had sworn that the spetsnaz would remain in the colony until it “established order”)

As reported here already, following reports of the likely deployment of a spetsnaz [special forces] unit in masks and full fighting gear in penal colony No. 77 in the Zaporizhya region and the removal of 15 prisoners, the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group called upon the Human Rights Ombudsperson to check these reports.

On the same day (31 March), two representatives of the Ombudsperson left for the penal colony. Their visit resulted in the withdrawal of the spetsnaz unit (although the Head of the colony Yury Zavhorodny had sworn that the spetsnaz would remain in the colony until it “established order”).

There is no information as yet as to the results of the investigation of the beating during the night of 30 to 31 March of prisoner Andriy Kryvonis who later died of injuries inflicted.
