The Feyers hid four Jewish people for 18 months, while Vasylyna Plyska’s family fgave shelter to four Jews. A Jewish boy hid for over 7 months with the family of Petro Yurashchuk from Vyshkiv, and the family of Maria Shutko from Khust saved the lives of two Jewish people who had escaped from a Hungarian concentration camp

Five residents of the Khust and Tachiv raions in the Transcarpathian region have been awarded the state honour “For courage”, Grade III. The Head of the Regional State Administration Oleh Havash, on the President’s instructions, presented the awards last week.

The families of Vasyl and Mykola Feyer from Velyka Uholka in the Tachiv raion, and the family of Vasylyna Plyska knew very well that they would be shot on the spot if it was learned that they were providing refuge to Jewish people. This did not stop them.

The Feyers hid four Jewish people for a year and a half, while Vasylyna Plyska’s family from the village of Hanychi gave shelter to four Jews. A Jewish boy hid for over 7 months with the family of Petro Yurashchuk from Vyshkiv in the Khust raion. And the family of Maria Shutko from Khust saved the lives of two Jewish people who had escaped from a Hungarian concentration camp.

The Jewish Council of Ukraine and the Fund “Remembering Victims of Fascism in Ukraine” approached the President asking that he award these courageous people, and the relevant Presidential Decree was issued. Sadly, Maria Vasylivna Shutkov did not live to receive the award, she died last December and the award was therefore handed to her daughters.
