Ukraine remembers the Victims of Holodomor

On Saturday, 27 November a procession and remembrance service [panakhyda] will be held in memory of those who died in the manmade famine. As darkness falls, candles in memory will be lit throughout Ukraine.

On Friday the presentation is taking place of a publication “Holodomor in Ukraine according to SBU Archival Documents”.  These include some 10 thousand pages of accounts, which are also in audio and  video format. On Saturday, 27 November a procession and remembrance service [panakhyda] will be held in memory of those who died in the manmade famine. As darkness falls, candles in memory will be lit throughout Ukraine.

The action “Holodomor 1932-1933 was genocide. We remember” will begin on Saturday in Kyiv near the metro station Arsenalna at 14.00.  From there a memorial procession will make its way to the National Memorial Museum to the Victims of Holodomor” where a memorial service will be held.

The service will be held by the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the Kyiv Patriarchate Filaret, Cardinal Lyubomyr Huzar, Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and the Heads of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine.

According to Ihor Yukhnovsky, member of the Public Committee on Honouring the Memory of the Victims of Holodomor, members of all churches and religious organizations in Ukraine have been invited to take part, as well as representatives of political parties. He says that Victims of Holodomor and public figures will light candles at the Memorial.

The President’s Press Service has said that President Yanukovych will also take part in the remembrance events at 9.30 on 27 November.

Memorial services and actions will also take place in Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Portugal, Serbia, the USA and doubtless other countries.

All will join in remembering the Victims by lighting candles in their window at 16.00 on Saturday.
