The Kyiv Prosecutor’s Office has officially completed its investigation into the death of Ihor Indylo and is handing the case to the court. Two police officers are charged, but not with Ihor’s death.

The police officer, Serhiy Prykhodko, who took Ihor Indylo to the police station from the hostel where they were both living is accused of exceeding his official powers with this involving violations and actions denigrating the victim’s dignity, yet without any signs of torture.

What is meant is that Prykhodko did not have the right in hours outside his work to take the decision to detain Ihor, and he dragged him from the bars of the temporary holding cell when Ihor refused to go inside. It can be seen from the video that Ihor was flung roughly onto the bench.

The Senior Inspector of the Shevchenkivsky District Police Station, Serhiy Kovalenko is also charged with negligence considerably harming Indylo’s rights.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, “the investigation’s version that the police officers were implicated in inflicting fatal injuries on Indylo did not find objective confirmation.”

The case has been sent to the Shevchenkivsky District Court in Kyiv and the Minister of Internal Affairs has been issued a statement regarding whether the Head of the Shevchenkivsky District Police Station, Colonel Petro Miroshnychenko and other heads of this department were fit tor the posts they hold.

The second forensic examination showed that Ihor Indylo fell from the bench and lay on the floor of the station without any help until he died.

Ihor Indylo died on 17 May 2010 after he was taken to the police station after an altercation with Prykhodko who was living in the student hostel. Ihor had been drinking with a friend who was unable to be there the next day which should have been Ihor Indylo’s twentieth birthday.

He went to the police station voluntarily, a young man who had no particular health problems.  Thanks initially to a report on TV 1 + 1, information about the young man’s death spread and caused considerable protest.  Probably as a result of the publicity, a criminal investigation was initiated and charges laid against two officers, although as we see, not for his death. .
