Day of Rage Organizer fined

The Pechersky District Court in Kyiv has fined the organizer of last Saturday’s protest entitled Day of Rage, Oleksandr Danylyuk. According to the NGO Spilna Sprava which he heads, Danylyuk was fined 340 UAH (around 35 Euros).

On 14 May and then 16 May the police drew up two protocols regarding administrative offences which Danylyuk supposedly committed. He was charged with infringing the rulings for holding a peaceful gathering.

This was the third hearing into this case by the court.  The report says that this was despite the clear lack of grounds for any punishment since the protest was held in the form of a meeting between National Deputy Yury Hrymchak and his voters.  At the time the police said that the protest had been banned by the court and was therefore illegal.

It is worth noting that courts are constantly allowing applications to ban protest actions.  Such bans are more often than not.  They did not, for example, encourage the law enforcement bodies to in any way impede coaches of supporters of pro-Russian groups who engaged in battles with right-wing nationalist Svoboda party supporters in Lviv on 9 May.
