Former Minister under Tymoshenko, Valery Ivashchenko goes on hunger strike

Forrme Acting Minister of Defence in Yulia Tymoshenko’s government, Valery Ivashchenko has begun an indefinite hunger strike in protest at his continued remand in custody. His case, like others, has led to accusations of selective prosecutions under the present regime

 

Forrme Acting Minister of Defence in Yulia Tymoshenko’s government, Valery Ivashchenko has begun an indefinite hunger strike in the SIZO [pre-trial detention centre] where he is being held. 

His lawyer Boris Nechyporenko told journalists that Mr Ivashchenko had formally informed the SIZO staff, Valery Ivashchenko had initially declared his intention to go on hunger strike on Friday, 17 June, in protest at the Pechersky District Court’s rejection of his application for release from custody pending trial.

He is charged with having, in November 2009 while  Acting Minister of Defence abused his position by signing a plan to sell the Feodosia Marine Engineering Works which was property of the Ministry of Defence.
