Judge Rodion Kireyev has refused to allow the leader of the European People’s Party, Wilfred Martens to meet with former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition Batkivshchyna Party who has been held in a Kyiv SIZO [detention unit] since 5 August this year

Judge Rodion Kireyev has refused to allow the leader of the European People’s Party, Wilfred Martens to meet with former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition Batkivshchyna Party who has been held in a Kyiv SIZO [detention unit] since 5 August this year. Journalists were informed of this by the Head of the Conrad Adenauer Foundation in Ukraine, Nico Lange.  Kireyev responded to their application, Mr Lange said, by stating that they had not provided enough arguments for organizing such a visit.

Nico Lange added that Mr Martens planned to discuss the state of democracy in Ukraine with the President as well as how the situation with Yulia Tymoshenko’s trial and detention would impact upon any EU – Ukraine Association Agreement.

On Thursday many media outlets reported a press conference given by Mr Martens after his meeting with Yanukovych. At it he called for Tymoshenko’s arrest and said that in a European democracy such prosecutions were out of the question.
