The High Council of Justice on Tuesday terminated the authority of Vasyl Onopenko in connection with the end of his term as President of the Supreme Court. The election, in which he is standing again, has been blocked

The High Council of Justice on Tuesday terminated the authority of Vasyl Onopenko in connection with the end of his term as President of the Supreme Court. This was announced by the Chair of the Council, Volodymyr Kolesnychenko.

Onopenko was a member of the High Council as President of the Supreme Court. His place in the High Council will be vacant until the appointment of a Supreme Court President.

Mr Onopenko’s term in office officially ended on 29 September 2011.  A law suit was lodged preventing new elections within the Supreme Court which at the time many media outlets suggested that Onopenko had every chance of winning.

The candidate favoured by the present regime is Ihor Samson.

The election must take place before the end of October.

In the judicial changes last year, the role of the High Council of Justice was seriously increased, and the Supreme Court’s powers sharply reduced.  These changes have been questioned by the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
