The opposition are demanding reports from the Head of the SBU [Security Service] Valery Khoroshkovsky and the Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Anatoly Mohylyov following Viktor Yanukovych’s public statement that armed attacks were being prepared against the authorities.

Mykola Tomenko, Vice-Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada (from BYUT) made the statement in parliament on Thursday. He said that on Wednesday, during an extended session of the Cabinet of Ministers, “the public were shocked by the President’s statement that opponents of the authorities were amassing weapons for attacks on bodies of power”. “The President effectively accused the opposition since we as the opposition are the President’s opponents”.

In view of this, he said, the opposition is demanding that on Friday during question hour to the Cabinet of Ministers the heads of the MIA and SBU are present.

“We demand that the Head of the SBU and Minister of Internal Affairs tell not only parliament, but also the Ukrainian people, in which regions and who is amassing weapons and preparing armed uprising. And what our law enforcement officers have done in the way of prevention to stop such criminal acts, which any civilized citizen must condemn”.

“If necessary, the opposition is ready to initiate the creation of a temporary investigative commission and actively set to work to prevent the kind of course of events that the President spoke of”, he said.
