Former Prime Minister, presidential candidate and leader of the opposition Batkivshchyna Party has been held in a SIZO [detention unit] for 100 days.  The Radio Svoboda Ukrainian Service spoke with her daughter, Yevhenia Carr, who said that she fears for her mother’s life and believes that the authorities are trying to break her. She says that her mother has become seriously ill and is confined to her bed while prosecutors interrogate her on fresh charges. She adds that in all the 100 days that she has been held in detention,  the authorities have refused to allow Tymoshenko’s own doctor to examine her

Yevhenia Carr had seen her mother a week earlier, since her mother cannot leave the cell, and only her defence lawyer, Serhiy Vlasenko has been in her cell while the interrogation was taking place.

“For the first time in the history of SIZO, in history of such custodial arrests altogether, the investigation is being carried out in the cell itself. That is already beyond the limit of all humiliation and persecution. This regime is simply applying torture.”

Yevhenia Carr can find no explanation, she says, for the assertion by the State Penitentiary Service that representatives of the Health Ministry were in the group which examined Yulia Tymoshenko and the denial by the Health Ministry that this was the case. She also stresses that her mother needs to have access to a doctor whom she trusts, and that any tests carried out by the Health Ministry can end up on the desks of the investigators or Prosecutor which will be a direct violation of her rights.

She says that if her mother’s health does not improve, they will be approaching international human rights organizations and institutions which are both involved in healthcare and in human rights defence. She adds that they do of course understand that representatives of those organizations may be refused permission to visit Ms Tymoshenko as have been even the members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Monitoring Committee.

Ms Carr’s only contact with her mother is via the defence lawyer. Yulia Tymoshenko is not allowed either a mobile phone or her IPad.
