The U.S. Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon says that the selective prosecution regarding former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko impedes full development of relations between his country and Ukraine, as well as between Ukraine and the EU

The U.S. Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon told journalists on Monday that the selective prosecution regarding former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko impedes full development of relations between his country and Ukraine, as well as between Ukraine and the EU.

“If Tymoshenko remains in prison, if she does not receive help and if there are problems with registering her party in the October elections, this will obstruct development of our relations”.

Interfax Ukraine and other information agencies also reported that Mr Gordon expressed concern over Ms Tymoshenko’s health and the possibly unsatisfactory medical care she was receiving. He said that they were unable to independently verify this, adding that the US Ambassador to Ukraine, John Teffl had been refused permission to visit Yulia Tymoshenko in the Kachanivska Penal Colony in Kharkiv.
