Olha Aivazovska, Head of the Civic Movement OPORA states clearly that although it is not bribery until the election campaign formally begins for potential parliamentary candidates to hand out gifts, food etc, it does infringe the standards for honest elections

Although it is not bribery until the election campaign formally begins for potential parliamentary candidates to hand out food baskets, it does infringe the standards for honest elections. This was the message from Olha Aivazovska, Head of the Civic Movement OPORA.  Speaking on TVi she said that a “surge of pseudo-beneficence had been seen during the May holidays with future candidates en masse handing out presents to potential voters.

She says that they call this the elections outside the law.  “The law is not infringed, but standards for honest elections are”.

One likely candidate had given away 150 plasma televisions and 100 UHA (just under 10 EUR) to school leavers.  In the Ivano-Frankivsk  region, vouchers for hairdressers had been handed out, while in the Kharkiv region there is a “Help your Neighbour” Fund which works with a number of candidates.

“Chartable actions are being mentioned together with a number of numbers – Feldman, Horina, Svyatash, Berezhna, Pisarenko”.
