Civic activists have held a picket outside the Prosecutor General’s Office to register their protest over the treatment lawyer Oleh Veremeyenko received in the Dniprovsky Police Station in Kyiv.  They passed a statement addressed to the Prosecutor General, the Minister of the Interior and the Human Rights Ombudsperson demanding prosecution of the police officers who manhandled Oleh Veremeyenko and a full investigation of the events of Monday evening resulting in the dismissal or prosecution of those responsible.

As reported, on 30 July lawyer Oleh Veremeyenko went to the Dniprovsky Police Station to give legal assistance to a young woman detained together with three others outside the place where the Party of the Regions Congress was taking place.  None had done anything wrong, but somebody decided that they were holding “suspicious packets”. His client felt weak and needed medical assistance but the police refused to allow the ambulance team in to see her.  After repeatedly asking, Veremeyenko put his hand through the window to press the button himself, and ended up being manhandled and injured.  He was taken to hospital with concussion and other injuries.
