EU Delegation expresses concern over postponement of Kyiv elections

05.06.2013
A spokesperson said that the EU is closely following common democratic principles such as free and fair elections.

The EU Delegation to Ukraine is concerned by the recent Constitutional Court judgement which found that the next scheduled elections for Kyiv Mayor and Council can take place in October 2015.

The EU Delegation Press Officer, David Sulik told Interfax Ukraine that since Ukraine and the EU were moving towards political association and economic integration, the Delegation was closely following observance of common democratic principles such as free and fair elections.

In this context, he said, the EU Delegation was deeply concerned by the postponement until 2015 of the Kyiv local elections which were last held in 2008.  The elections must be held at reasonable intervals.

The Constitutional Court announced its judgement on 30 May in response to a submission from the relevant number of Party of the Regions MPs.  It is the Party of the Regions which has blocked attempts in the Verkhovna Rada this year to schedule the elections.  See Constitution to Order for more details.
