Sevastopol: Students leave in protest as Russian flag raised

31.03.2014
Two days after the dean of the Sevastopol National University of Nuclear Energy and Industry Mikhail Divizinyuk was dismissed after he refused to accept Russian rule, students made their protest unmistakably clear.

On March 28 a ceremony during which the Ukrainian flag was lowered and Russian flag raised over the Sevastopol National University of Nuclear Energy and Industry did not go as its organizers had planned.

The ceremony came two days after the dean Mikhail Divizinyuk was fired by the Sevastopol education authorities.  Black Sea News quotes their source as saying that this is because he refused to raise the Russian flag and recognize Russian jurisdiction.

Divizinyuk argued that the institute was not only an academic institution, but also an active Ukrainian nuclear structure, registered with the International Atomic Energy Agency.  There is a working small nuclear reactor guarded by a special nuclear security unit of Ukraine’s interior forces

On March 28 as the Ukrainian flag was being lowered, a considerable number of the students began singing the national anthem and continued singing after the recording was hastily turned off. After the acting dean tried to stop the singing, the students began chanting “Glory to Ukraine – Glory to the heroes” and others, then left.
