Terrorists force Donbas newspapers to suspend publication

03.06.2014

One of the largest newspapers in the Donbas region, Donbas, as well as the paper Vecherny Donbas, have suspended publication rather than comply with the illegal demands of the Kremlin-backed militants

As reported earlier, around 10 heavily armed militants from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and probably led by a Chechen, arrived at the editorial offices of Donbas, as well as Vecherny Donbas, at around midday on June 2.  They abducted Alexander Brizh and his deputy, Andrei Krevtsun, as well as the Chief Editor of Vecherny Donbas, Leonid Lapa.  All three were later released, but clearly after receiving unacceptable demands.

Brizh later gathered his staff together and explained that he had no choice but to suspend publication since the journalists would be in breach of Ukrainian legislation if they complied with the militants’ demands.

He said that the same situation exists with Vecherny Donbas whose staff have also been sent on unpaid leave.
