Police terminate murder investigation over abducted student Yury Popravka

19.06.2014
19-year-old Yury Popravka’s body was found with horrific injuries in a river near Slovyansk, almost certainly after being abducted by Kremlin-backed militants who had seized control of the city

Viktor Smaliy, lawyer representing the mother of Yury Popravka, the 19-year-old student whose body was found badly mutilated in a river near Slovyansk has announced that the police have closed the homicide investigation.

Smaliy is scathing about the decision, especially given that the young student was not just murdered, but clearly subjected to torture.

As reported, two bodies were found initially in the river near Slovyansk (another also later).  They were Horlivka city council deputy, Volodymyr Rybak and Yury Popravka.  Yury’s body was identified a little later.  He was studying at the Sociology and Law Faculty of the Kyiv Polytechnic and had taken part in EuroMaidan.

There was no clarity as to how he came to be abducted after visiting his girlfriend, Dasha, who is studying in Kharkiv.
