Leader of the Belarusian Opposition imprisoned

“It is absolutely obvious today that the regime is afraid of us, and this will certainly lead to the collapse of the dictatorship”, Milinkevich said after the sentence was read out.

14:40, 27/04/2006 The Sovietsky District Court in Minsk has sentenced the leader of the democratic forces, Aleksandr Milinkevich, to 15 days administrative arrest. The politician was charged with infringing Article 167 § 2 – organizing an unsanctioned event. This is how the authorities labelled the peaceful procession “Chernobyl Path” which took place in Minsk on 26 April, with the consent of the city authorities. The sentence on Milinkevich was passed by Judge Yury Gorbatovsky. The leader of the opposition denounced the actions of the authorities as “political schizophrenia”, and said that he had been ready for such a sentence. “It is absolutely obvious today that the regime is afraid of us, and this will certainly lead to the collapse of the dictatorship”, Milinkevich said after the sentence was read out. He will be held in the special detention centre on Okrestyna Street.

“Radio Svoboda” reports that the same jail sentences were passed down on the leader of the Belarusian Party of Communists, Sergei Kalyakin, the head of the Labour Party, Aleksandr Bukhvostov and the leader of the Belarusian People’s Front, Vintsuk Vychorka.
