Like it or not, Karpachova will continue as Human Rights Ombudsperson
05.06.2006 Human Rights Ombudsperson, Nina Karpachova, has submitted to parliament her resignation in writing in connection with her election as State Deputy of Ukraine.
UNIAN was informed of this by the Human Rights Ombudspersons Press Service.
However, according to the Press Service, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stopped work on 25 May and had not by that time considered N. Karpachovas letter.
The Press Service therefore states that N. Karpachova is obliged to carry out her constitutional powers as Human Rights Ombudsperson since, in accordance with Article 85 § 17 of the Constitution of Ukraine, the appointment and dismissal from office of the Human Rights Ombudsperson lie within the competence of the Verkhovna Rada.
The Press Service stresses that N. Karpachova is not receiving a salary as State Deputy of Ukraine.
Nina Karpachova was elected to the Verkhovna Rada on the candidate list of the Party of the Regions (No. 2)
