47 Deputies question the recent law restricting the scope of the Constitutional Court

47 Deputies have put forward a submission to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine calling for the ban on the Constitutional Court’s review of amendments to the Constitution which have already come into effect to be recognized as illegitimate.

The Deputies are demanding that the amendments to the Law “On the Constitutional Court” containing such a norm be declared unconstitutional.

State Deputy Mykhailo Pozhyvanov has indicated that the submission will be presented by himself, Vasyl Kuybida from “Nasha Ukraina” [“Our Ukraine”] and Oleh Nedosha from BYuT [Yulia Tymoshenko’s Bloc].

He added that the submission to the Constitutional Court had been registered on Tuesday evening.

“The Deputies who passed through such amendments to the law on the Constitutional Court were attempting in quite unacceptable fashion to interfere with the powers of the Constitutional Court and to influence the work of its judges. This ban is in contravention of fundamental provisions of the Constitution of Ukraine regarding the division of power into legislative, executive and judicial branches”, Mr Pozhyvanov stated.

As reported earlier, the Verkhovna Rada had prohibited the Constitutional Court from reviewing amendments to the Constitution already in force.
