28 September is International Right to Know Day

All are cordially invited to a press conference and roundtable “On openness of the authorities and human rights in Kharkiv and the region in 2005-2006” which will take place on 27 September at 14.00 in the Kharkiv Press Club (42 Myronosytska St)

The Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group and the Civic Information and Methodology Cente “Vsesvit” [“Universe”] will present their annual report “Human rights in the Kharkiv region – 2005”. Work on the report was begun at the end of 2005, and carried out thanks to the financial support of the International Renaissance Foundation and the US Embassy in Ukraine. It was recently published as a book containing 224 pages, with a print run of 500 copies.

The “heroes” of the book will talk about the results of violations of their rights and their actions to eliminate these violations. Their accounts will be accompanied by commentaries from the Director of “Vsesvit” Natalka Zukhar, the Head of the KHPG Public Reception Centre, while Yevhen Zakharov and Oleksandr Severyn will talk about observance of freedom of information in Ukraine and, in particular, in the Kharkiv region. After a half-hour break with refreshments served, a roundtable discussion will begin on current problems of human rights protection in the Kharkiv region (15.30 – 16.30).
