Council of Europe assured that monitoring will be carried out of penal institutions in the Lviv region
“Yesterday, during a visit to Lviv by the Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg, it was agreed that we would be given the opportunity to carry out monitoring in Lviv region penal institutions to check the conditions inmates are held in”, activist of the civic network OPORA, Taras Halatlyak reported during a meeting at the Lviv Reform Press Club to discuss “When and how law enforcement agencies in Ukraine violate human rights”.
“The Human Rights Commissioner promised to allocate funding if needed for doing repairs in these institutions. We are planning to carry out monitoring in all corrective institutions of the Lviv region, aside from the Mykolaiv Penal Colony No. 50 which Thomas Hammarberg visited yesterday, since the latter had repairs done recently.”, Taras Halatlyak stated.
