The protest was over the appointment as Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Mykola Plekhanov, the former head of the Sumy region MIA during the 2004 elections and beating up of students

The protest was run by the Youth Union of Nasha Ukraina in reaction to the appointment of Mykola Plekhanov Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs.

According to a representative of the youth organization, Oleksiy Hrytsenko, Mykola Plekhanov was responsible for students being beaten up, mass election fraud and enforcement body pressure on observers and members of electoral commissions during the 2004 presidential elections.

Plekhanov’s appointment was also commented upon today by the former Minister of Internal Affairs Yury Lutsenko. “When the door to my office opened, and Plekhanov walked in, I almost fell off my chair. If one gets rid of the specific police phrases, then the conversation went: “My God, what are you doing here?”, and he: “I was told to come here”. “I said: “Turn around, and quick march out! I don’t have any place for you!”.  And he is today in charge of staff in the MIA and for MIA internal security! This is an appointment which will seriously discredit the new Ukrainian police”.
